Afternoon Tea Near Orchard: A Slow Taiwanese Afternoon at Typhoon Cafe

Orchard Road at 3pm is a strange in-between hour: too late for lunch, too early for dinner, and the malls are full. This is when Typhoon Cafe at Plaza Singapura brings out Typhoon Afternoon Delights, its Taiwanese afternoon tea menu, served from 2pm to 5pm.

Here's how an afternoon there usually goes, and what to order.

2pm: Find a Quiet Table

Typhoon Cafe is on Level 4 of Plaza Singapura, a few minutes from Dhoby Ghaut MRT. The lunch crowd has thinned out by now, so it's an easy place to sit, talk and stay a while.

Choose Your Tea Set

Typhoon Cafe Afternoon Tea Delights menu and prices

Two friends usually go for the High Tea in a Box ($29.90++ for two): nine small Taiwanese bites in a wooden box, with two drinks. On your own, the Soufflé Set ($16.90++) is the pick, with Soufflé Stackers, fresh berries and ice cream.

For the drinks, the GIFEL Tea Series comes hot in a glass teapot, and Cold Brew Tea comes chilled in a bottle. Milk tea fans can upgrade the Soufflé Set to a Pot-Boiled Milk Tea for $3.90, served in its own pot.

3pm: Add Dim Sum at 20% Off

This is where Typhoon Cafe afternoon tea differs from a hotel one. Between 2pm and 5pm, à la carte dim sum is 20% off, so a basket of Handmade Xiao Long Bao (usually $12.90++ for six) comes to about $10.30++. Prawn Dumplings, Truffle Mushroom Bao and Salted Egg Custard Buns are also on the list. Only the Abalone Seafood Soup Jumbo Dumpling is excluded.

4pm: One More Pot of Tea

Afternoon tea is about not rushing. Order another tea, finish the soufflé, and head back into Orchard before the 5pm dinner crowd arrives.

Why People Choose It

It's central, it's affordable, and it's different. Instead of scones and sandwiches, you get Taiwanese flavours and soufflé pancakes, at a price that suits a weekday break as much as a weekend catch-up. Note that Typhoon Cafe is not halal, as several dishes contain pork.
